With
news breaking at internet speed, the IAM offers a new way to stay
current, video-on-demand on its web site. “Members want the latest
news. Video-on-demand lets them watch the news at their convenience,”
said IAM President Tom Buffenbarger. More
than 90 video clips were posted last year, an average of two per week,
and the pace is picking up. For example, 2,000 viewers downloaded a
streaming video message from Buffenbarger within hours of the September
11 tragedy. By
clicking on the “News” section of Goiam.org, members can see Breaking
News –– events as
they happen, from the latest economic news to what’s going on at
Capitol Hill ... IAMUnion features interviews with labor leaders
and activists ... Third Shift contains in-depth reports about
issues important to working families. To
view videos on the web, users need RealPlayer 8 (the latest version is
RealOne, but it requires a newer computer) and a high-speed modem. Click
here
to download a free version of RealPlayer 8 Basic. Look for “Click here
to download RealPlayer” at the bottom of the home page. To
run Real Player 8 Basic, PC users need a Pentium II or better processor
and 32 megs of RAM. Internet
connections below 56 Kbps currently don’t have enough “broadband”
or connection speed to handle videos smoothly, but that will change.
“The broadband bottleneck will be broken in the next few years, making
video-on-demand available to almost any computer user,” said IAM
Communications Director Rick Sloan. “When the breakthrough comes,
we’ll be ready for it.”
