Organizing 22,000 New Members a Year“Your union is committed to growth,” declared IAM President Tom Buffenbarger in a speech that set bold goals for organizing and called on every member to help restore the IAM to pre-2000 membership levels. “If we do our jobs – if in each district we can make a net gain of 250 new members per year – when we next assemble at the next convention, we will be back to 500,000 members,” said Buffenbarger, who added the resolution passed at this convention to fund new organizing efforts will help this union reach its organizing goals. Despite deep membership losses during the past three years and an administration that refused to uphold collective bargaining rights, the IAM claimed significant organizing successes. Buffenbarger cited IAM organizing wins in Nevada, Florida, Pennsylvania and other states. In Canada and the U.S. there are 19.2 million workers in industries where the IAM already has a significant presence. “For this union of ours, the organizing possibilities are endless.” |
